What I've Found

When I listen to music, images come naturally to my mind. I follow my intuition, the music guides my editing. A lot of movie directors I met work with their intellect, except Terence Malick. When I worked with him, we only had a few lines in the script, images, intentions. If Malick provides his actors with literally nothing on paper, he always talks to them during a scene to guide them in a particular intention... I could say that I work in the same way. I start with an idea and let myself be guided by the moment. I can't explain what the film will be, I discover it like a musician strings together chords to find a color harmony, something that will touch me, like a painting ...

I have been working in the film industry for years. I do the sound of the shooting. I worked with great directors (M. Haneke, T. Malick, Kore-Eda, Dardennes Brothers, J. Audiard ...), with great directors of photography (D. Kondji; E. Gauthier, Y. Le Saux ...). I observed, learned a lot. It is the sound which leads me to the image and not the opposite. When I listen to music, images fill my head. I try to get closer to the art of painting when I film. Only the art of painting allows me to work with the randomness of the material: "... The material of the painting always brings you elsewhere from the place where you wanted to arrive..." I work alone, the place and the light are my canvas. My camera is a paintbrush, the actors are my models. I always work with a synopsis, an idea, a feeling. But when I shoot it's my instinct that takes over... I talk to the actor while filming and together we create a living picture.
